Things to celebrate, things to remember

Posted by RLD on 26th February 2009

It is a feature of Remzije Sherifi’s way that she touches on both the local and the truly international.

On 24th February she was awarded a Glasgow Community Champion Public Service Award.  This recognition has been welcomed by all who know her and this might be a good time to remind ourselves of Joyce McMillan’s appreciation at the Saltire Society Awards not too long ago (http://www.sandstonepress.com/site/hinterland/joyce_mcmillan_on_shadow_behind_the_sun).

Only two days later the Hague tribunal found five senior politicians and soldiers guilty of crimes of persecution in her native Kosovo giving a total sentence of 96 years.  The BBC’s story can be accessed here (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/7911761.stm) and a reminder of the atocities accessed here (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/special_report/1998/kosovo2/308071.stm).

Throughout the writing of SHADOW BEHIND THE SUN Mrs Sherifi told us that she wished her book to be a bridge.  All her work in this country is to that end and Sandstone Press is proud to be her publisher.

The Association for Scottish Literary Studies (http://www.arts.gla.ac.uk/ScotLit/ASLS/index.html) is running a conference on Robert Burns on Saturday 28th.  Drouth Magazine, our colleagues on FICKLE MAN: Robert Burns in the 21st Century, will be present and look forward to engaging in the debate.  FICKLE MAN is available at all good bookshops and online.

Now please do take time to explore the web site and don’t forget to click on the word ‘Hinterland’ at the foot of every book page.
