About The Radical Field
That the work of Kenneth White is a landmark not only in Scottish literature but in the field of world writing and thought, is something that many people have known for a long time. But if the influence of White’s work has been spreading, and will continue to do so, relatively few people even yet have a sense of its complete range. The aim of Tony Mac McManus, writer and musician, educationalist and political activist, who has been in touch with White for years, and who has had access to his French writings, is to do just that.

Tony McManus (left) developed over the years a high understanding of
geopoetics and completed The Radical Field before his death in 2002.
White took up a post as lecturer in English at the University of Pau in the Atlantic Pyrenees Departement in the south-west of France in the Autumn of 1967. As somebody already known of as ‘a poet’, he was viewed with some suspicion from the start, a suspicion justified by his immediate involvement in extra-curricular activities...

This profile of The Radical Field author, Tony McManus, comes from Norman Bissell, Director of the Scottish Centre for Geopoetics. The two men were good friends who shared common interests in educational and cultural renewal and worked closely together to promote a greater understanding of geopoetics in Scotland.
