ABOUT RON MCMILLAN
Ron McMillan, born in the Central Scottish town Paisley in 1958, grew up in what he considers ‘a typically functional family of the period; a family with two hard-working parents, an omnipresent network of adoring aunts, attentive uncles and feisty cousins, as well as three surviving grandparents who were equal parts cranky, loving and endlessly entertaining.’

This is a refreshing and entertaining look at my native islands. It has all the more value as the author is a much travelled journalist. It would be impossible to describe Shetland without giving the weather its place. Ron McMillan does this to sketch in the background to present day Shetland.

EXTRACT FROM BETWEEN WEATHERS
My sleep in an otherwise unoccupied and frigid room the size of a tennis court goes thankfully undisturbed by boat rigging intrusions, and the next morning finds me wrapped up in every item of clothing I own, duck-waddling past the Donna Rose towards where Keith Robertson’s little workboat bobs against the floating marina. Keith is the part-time böd warden, and full-time proprietor of a mussel farming operation whose production lines make neat patterns a couple of kilometres out in the firth.
