Welcome to my new blogspot
My name is Stuart Campbell and my new book, RLS IN LOVE: the Love Poetry of Robert Louis Stevenson, is to be released by Sandstone Press on July 15th. The files are with the printer now so, for me, after a year of intense work, and many years gestation before that, it is a time for patience.
RLS has been a source of fascination to me, an inspiration, and a sort of quest that has taken me all over the world. Among my collection of artefacts is a drawing by RLS of himself with his (soon to be) wife Fanny and her daughter Belle on a hillside in California. It is a quick sketch really, but worth including in the book’s very revealing photographic section.
RLS’s difficult relations with women are among the less well known facets of his life. Women influenced the work from the start, not simply as muse figures but as direct critics and commentators. The book does much to describe and explain this. Not that it was all easy going!
I will be posting frequently from this time, and at greater length and will be delighted if you drop in from time to time.
