Birdsong in the morning

Posted by RLD on 14th April 2010

Waking to birdsong and going out into it early this morning I was reminded of this poem I wrote a few years ago. It appeared in ‘Pushing Out The Boat’, edited by Magi Gibson and published by East Aberdeenshire Council.

Birdsong in the morning

Birdsong in the morning.
Behind closed curtains
behind closed eyes
why am I so unhappy?

Easy.  My hip hurts and my back hurts.
My mother has advanced Parkinson’s Disease.
She has been moved into a Nursing Home.
Naturally she hates the whole idea.
My wife’s mother isn’t well either.
My girlfriend has been trying to dump me for months.
Few strangers read my poems.
Even fewer friends read my poems.
The book I am working on has stuck.
I’ve lost faith in it anyway.
I can’t sleep.

Still, birdsong in the morning.
